Tandis que les premiers convives s'amusent et se charrient, Harold tarde à apparaître. Michael doit en outre accepter un invité de dernière minute : son ami de fac Alan, un homme marié qu'il soupçonne d’être un homo refoulé. Lorsqu'Harold arrive enfin, celui-ci affiche une humeur sarcastique qui alourdit l’atmosphère : chacun laisse alors éclater ses rancoeurs…
